Mine - Privacy-First Video Journaling App
Hats I Wore
Challenge
Created a privacy-focused alternative to subscription-based video journaling apps that respects user data ownership while providing a seamless daily video capture experience. The challenge was building a feature-rich mobile app that works completely offline without compromising on functionality or user experience.
Solution
Architected a local-first React Native application using Expo SDK 50+ with TypeScript for type safety. Implemented SQLite for metadata storage and local file system for video assets. Built custom video processing pipeline using FFmpeg for compilation and thumbnail generation.
Designed a clean, minimalist interface with React Native Paper components and custom UI elements. Implemented Zustand for state management and React Query for data synchronization. Created automated video compilation system that merges daily clips into cinematic timelines with background processing.
Outcomes
- Delivered 100% free, privacy-first alternative to subscription video journaling apps
- Achieved complete offline functionality with local-first architecture
- Built seamless 1-2 second video capture with auto-stop functionality
- Implemented timeline compilation with mixed aspect ratio normalization
- Created export system supporting native sharing without watermarks
- Designed gentle reminder system respecting user preferences and Do Not Disturb
Key Learnings
The key insight was that privacy and functionality don't have to be mutually exclusive. By embracing local-first architecture from the start, we eliminated entire categories of privacy concerns while actually improving performance. The focus on simplicity - just capture and compile - proved more valuable than feature bloat.
